Thursday 10th October – bike **** Pont de Lescarbonners (La Fox) to Agen - Cloudy

It was very cloudy and a bit drizzly when we woke up but did manage to get exercises done. Instead of an easy morning on the riverbank in the sun (our ideal plan!) we packed up fairly early and went along the river to the Intermarche at St Sylvestre. Decided to go up the very steep hill we wimped out on yesterday on the bikes to the medieval village at Penne d’Agenais and were pleased we did because it was a nice walk round a walled town with a Basilique at the top which had a silver domed roof and its very own Cave! We wound our way down through the narrow streets and then back up to the van to begin our journey a bit further south. Another day another river – this time it’s the Garonne near Agen. The crops on the way down were nearly all sunflowers or maize but then suddenly turned to tobacco everywhere! We parked at La Fox on the Garonne Canal and after lunch cycled into Agen along the tow path. 20km today all along a really great flat path There is an aquaduct in the city where the Canal passes over the Garonne river and we cycled over that with me giving Mag a nightmare because although they tell you to get off your bike not many people do and I was weaving my way around pedestrians and getting so close to the edge she thought I was bound to fall in! We aimed for the spire of the cathedral to find the city centre and had a busy bike ride around the narrow streets and pedestrian centre. Cycled back and actually saw two or three boats on the canal, there is hardly anyone about so it’s a rare sight. We are staying on the canal at La Fox tonight and were treated to a lovely sunset while a whole group of Nordic walkers came clacking past with their sticks and head torches on ready for the return journey!
